This questionnaire may seem lengthy or feel like an interrogation. That's not its purpose. You want to adopt a dog – a living creature that may live with you for the next 10 to 15 years or longer. Our goal is to find every dog a home where it will stay forever. The questionnaire helps us get to know you better, but it's equally important that you think through the individual questions yourself and make sure you're ready to take on all the responsibility and handle unexpected situations that may arise during your life together.

What is your home environment like? (Busy city, quiet countryside, apartment building, house with a garden)

If you live in an apartment — on which floor? Do you have an elevator or only stairs?

If you live in a family house — do you have a sufficiently secured garden?

Is your property fenced? If so, how high and secure is the fence?

Do you have a balcony or open spaces at home that could be risky for the dog?

If you're renting — does the landlord know about your intention to get a dog and agree with it?

Experience and approach to training

Do you have experience training dogs? If so, what kind?

What experience do you have with dogs that may initially be shy, distrustful or react sensitively to certain stimuli (e.g. noise, men, other dogs)?

How would you describe your approach to raising a dog — patient and gradual, or do you expect quick adaptation?

Are you prepared for the fact that a dog from the Balkans may behave differently than a dog from a Czech shelter or breeder?

How do you plan to introduce the dog to its new environment and family members?

How will you handle a situation where the dog is afraid of the leash or doesn't want to go outside?

Are you willing to attend basic training with the dog or consult a trainer/advisor?

How do you plan to address any behavioural problems the dog may have?

How would you react if the dog barked at home or at visitors?

How would you react if the dog growled at children/partner during introduction?

How would you react if the dog reacted reactively to other dogs or strangers outside?

Health and veterinary care

Are you prepared for the dog to possibly need veterinary care immediately upon arrival (e.g. check-up, deworming, lab tests)?

Do you already have a chosen vet or clinic where you would take the dog?

What is your approach to preventive care — vaccinations, deworming, antiparasitics, regular check-ups?

Expectations, patience and adaptation

What does a successful adoption mean to you? How do you imagine the first months with the dog?

How would you react if the dog didn't match your expectations (e.g. shy, timid, noisy)?

How do you feel about the fact that adaptation can take several months?

How do you handle stressful situations — e.g. destroyed items, poor hygiene, growling, housetraining issues?

Can you stay calm and separate emotions while raising the dog?

Financial and long-term commitment

Are you prepared for the financial costs of caring for a dog (food, veterinary care, supplies)? How much do you plan to invest monthly?

Are you aware that adoption is a commitment for many years, and that a dog's average lifespan is 10–15 years?

Who will take care of the dog during your long-term absence (e.g. vacation, illness, death)?

If your family situation changes (breakup, divorce, moving, etc.), what will happen to the adopted dog?

Living together as a family

Do all household members agree with adopting the dog?

How will you go about introducing the dog to children or other animals?

Whose dog will it primarily be — who will be its main caregiver?

Commitment to the organization

Are you aware that if you can't manage despite our help, you need to give us time to find a safe solution, and the dog cannot be returned overnight?

Are you aware that a dog from the Balkans may not be suitable for everyone, and the adoption must be approved by our organization after evaluating the questionnaire and a phone consultation?

Are you aware that the dog cannot be given to another person without the organization's consent?

Adoption = joy and responsibility

Adopting a rescued dog brings joy, but also responsibility. Our dogs often come from difficult conditions and may carry experiences that affect their behaviour.

You need to expect the first days, weeks or even months to be challenging. The dog may be scared, insecure, initially avoid contact, be afraid of new situations, or be learning ordinary things it has never encountered before. Some dogs may show signs of separation anxiety, reactivity or other behavioural issues that require time, patience and consistent work to resolve.

There's no guarantee the dog will settle into its new home within a few days. Every dog is different and adaptation can take several months. If you're looking for a dog that will function flawlessly in every situation from day one, adopting a rescued dog may not be the right choice.

We'll do our best to recommend a dog that matches your circumstances and lifestyle. Still, it's important to keep in mind that a living animal is unpredictable, and every adoption carries a degree of uncertainty.
